Babies and Toddlers look adorable when wearing a costume, but they usually find unconfortable any clothing that constrains their movement or thightens their head or their limbs. Time ago I decided to make a Bugs Bunny  costume for my 2 years old daughter who was a big fan of Baby Looney Tunes and I am about to use it again to dress up my son now that he is the same age and size.

This tutorial might help you to make an easy, cute and comfortable costume perfect for a toddler boy o girl.

1. Choosing the Fabrics

In order to give the idea of a fluffy bunny’s fur, I chose a plushy polycotton fabric in 3 colors: silvery gray (that will be use for the widest part of the costume), white (for Bugs Bunny’s belly) and light pink (for the inner part of the ears).

I also recycled some foam (sponge rubber) to build the ears, as I wanted them to stand upright. Furthermore I took an old pom pom from a very old knit cap to make Bugs Bunny’s tail.

2. Making the blouse

I drew an A-line blouse pattern by using one of my child’s t-shirts to find the correct measures. On the front of the blouse I subtracted an oval which represents Bags Bunny’s belly and needs to be make with white plush fabric.

 

Starting from the measurement of the armhole, I made the pattern of short puff sleeves (not too puffy though!)

 

Here it is the cutout fabric. The good thing, when working with plush polycotton is that you do not need to serge seams!

 

Now the white oval “belly” needs to be saw in place. I decided to hide the zipper along the tummy.

 

Here they are the blouse/dress pieces all assembled. If you are making the costume for a little girl, you can emphasize the “A” line and make it longer and more close to a dress. If the costume is for a baby boy, you may saw it shorter and more straight. You can also make a pair of short, puffy pants with the help of a rubber band around the waist and thigh circumferences.

 

At the end, I applied a lovely white pom pom at the bottom of the blouse’s back

3) Bugs Bunny hood (with bunny ears)

As I didn’t want to apply bunny ears nor on a headband neither on a hat (beacuse my children cannot stand feeling their head anyhow “costrained”), I chose to saw a hood with solid bunny ears and then attach it to the blouse.

I used recicled foam rubber to make the bunny ears

 

I upholstered the foam with gray and pink plush pabric

 

Then, I attached the ears to the hood by inserting them inside 2 holes I left open on the hood itself.

 

At the end, I sew the hood to the back of the blouse’s neck.

 

And here it is the final result: your baby will look adorable wearing this Bugs Bunny costume!
